Description

COIL Circulate CoLab is an innovation challenge program aimed at creating transformative circular economy prototypes and demonstration projects in the food and environment sectors. Circulate CoLab is running three challenges looking to prototype circular economy ideas and innovations that could scale into industrial-sized demonstration projects with the potential to transform or disrupt existing approaches.

How it works:

  • COIL Circulate CoLab will issue a challenge focused on a particular element of the food or environment industry supply chain calling for teams of 3-7 organizations (private businesses, social enterprises, not-for-profits) to submit an innovative way to reuse waste material, reduce emissions or create incremental social or environmental benefit.

  • The top three teams will participate in a twelve-week CoLab process where they will be provided $20,000 in funding to test and prototype their idea.

  • At the end of the CoLab, each team will pitch their idea to a panel of experts.

  • At least one of the teams will receive an additional $100,000 funding to scale their idea into one-of-five full industrial-sized COIL demonstration projects.  Other teams may also receive additional funding to expand their idea.

COIL Circulate CoLab Challenge #1

Connecting the chain: Increasing circularity in upstream food systems

For more information regarding our CoLab process, please visit coil.eco/colab.

Our first challenge focuses on the components of the food system between production and consumption: processing and manufacturing, distribution and foodservice, grocery and hospitality. Sixty-one per cent of the food produced in Canada is lost or wasted along these three segments.

How can your team work with new technologies, partners, business models or processes to reduce avoidable food waste and/or generate new value or products from organic materials (unavoidable food waste, byproducts/coproducts, etc) that would otherwise be at their end-of-life?

Deadline for submissions is October 22, 2021.

The CoLab process for our first challenge will take place between November 8, 2021 and January 28, 2022.
